LCA to CCUS & alternative fuels workshop

A common methodological approach for LCA application in European projects

December 15th and 16th, 2022

Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage and Alternative Fuels (CCUS & AF) have a significant potential to achieve important societal goals such as mitigating GHG emissions or even reaching negative GHG emissions. To demonstrate that emerging CCUS & AF technologies could contribute to obtaining such goals, Life cycle assessment (LCA) has become the more widely accepted methodology.

Even if LCA is a standardized method, current LCA practice differs widely in methodological choices. The resulting LCA studies show large variability which limits their value for decision support. The application of LCA to CCU is subject to methodological pitfalls and proposes methodological frameworks and guidelines to reduce the ambiguity of methodological choices and enhance the transparency of LCA studies.

Despite the recent efforts, substantial gaps remain, particularly, when it comes to the application of LCA to European Projects or proposals. This workshop will contribute to this debate by building on previous works in LCA standardization and on the specific expertise emerging from the LCA’s of CINEA’s H2020 CCUS & AF projects.

The goal of this workshop is to find a common methodological approach for LCA application in European projects, starting, but not limited to the European Framework for Research and Innovation, (H2020, Horizon Europe) on Carbon Capture Use and Storage (CCUS) and alternative fuels.

Intended Audience: LCA practitioners with relevant experience in the application of LCA to CCUS. The participation will be by invitation only.

  1. Share experiences regarding the application of LCA to CCUS and alternative fuel technologies;
  2. Finding a common ground on the methodological issues emerging and applying a common methodological approach;
  3. Providing recommendations for policymakers in the form of a policy recommendations report or white paper.
